Derek Carr is still in place

We’ve already covered this ground this weekend, so we don’t want to rehash too much here. That said, the numbers are so striking that it’s important to note. Suffice it to say, Derek Carr is in rare territory for a long-term NFL starting quarterback.

On Sunday night, unless something crazy happens to Carr between now and then, he will make his 119th regular-season start for the Raiders and will be searching for win No. 53. Only four quarterbacks in NFL history have started as many games as Derek Carr has for the Raiders and won so little. It’s a short list and it’s not exactly a Who’s Who of NFL greatness: Norm Snead, Archie Manning, Jon Kitna, Jeff George.

Yeah, that’s it.

Carr has put up impressive stats here and there, which has given him some reasons to find security from one year to the next in his job. Certainly, it’s not his fault that the Raiders are trading away their most proven players during his tenure and then drafting incompetent replacements. He’s not deciding to trade Mack, and he’s not the one drafting Damon Arnette.

Still, a team can only go as far as their quarterback can take them, and unless you believe that 12-4 season back in 2016 was somehow the “real Carr”, then the Raiders quarterback needs to shoulder the blame here. The Raiders are awfully patient for a team that hasn’t won a Super Bowl since shortly after they moved to Los Angeles in the early ’80s. Yeah, that was a few cities ago.

Even the Chiefs were winning with Alex Smith and yet still knew that they were hitting the ceiling and did something about it. These Raiders continue to stroll Carr out there and hope that reshuffling some chairs at less important spots will somehow get the job done. It’s one of the things we love most about the Raiders.

Honorable Mention: We ran out of time before we got to their trashy fans that make themselves look bad, their Nest thermometer of a stadium, or their willingness to hire all of their decision-makers from the world of TV broadcasting. But just know Chiefs Kingdom appreciates it all.
