Andrew Wylie

We’re already near the end of another week of practice and, at present, both the Chiefs starting right tackle Lucas Niang and their backup tackle Mike Remmers have yet to participate in practice, even on a limited basis. This comes after missing the team’s last game, a win over the visiting Green Bay Packers, in its entirety.

In short, Andrew Wylie, you should get your helmet on now.

The Chiefs haven’t put Niang or Remmers on injured reserve just yet, which means the team is holding out hope to get one or both players back sooner than later. But in the interim, when there are unpredictable timelines involved, it often means that a guy like Wylie will face the pressure of having to be ready to go at a moment’s notice—sometimes even when waiting for pre-game warm-ups to decide who is in and who is out.

For Wylie, the tea leaves are a bit more predictable than that if both guys ahead of him haven’t practiced just yet. That’s a real opportunity, then, for a still young yet experienced lineman whose best moments are found playing the interior. Wylie is headed toward unrestricted free agency after the season, and he’s bound to earn an opportunity to start somewhere given his experience. If he can also prove to be a capable substitute outside, then that reflects even better on him in a year where he’s pushed down the pecking order a bit farther than expected.
