I….what? What just happened last weekend?? The Bills lost to the Jaguars. The Broncos absolutely demolished the Cowboys? I feel like I am in an episode of the Twilight Zone – nothing makes sense! The one take away from Sunday is that this season, unlike any season in recent memory, has no stand out – certainly not in the AFC and maybe not even in the NFC. Let’s take a look at the AFC West and put it all in perspective as we head into Week 10.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers were the only team that really did what was expected this week out of the AFC West. The Chargers took on a poor Eagles team and barely handled their business. The game came down to a field goal (which past Chargers teams would have Charger-ed). Maybe it’s having Justin Herbert as their quarterback or maybe their new coach Brandon Staley; either way, the Chargers notched a win and put themselves in first place in the AFC West.

Herbert really needed a win to bounce back from two pretty poor games against the Ravens and the Patriots. And bounce back he did. Herbert was stunning against the Eagles (which isn’t saying much since they are not a great team), but you play the team that is in front of you. He showed poise and toughness especially in this touchdown run (not to mention the good offensive line play on this play):

The Chargers will need to keep winning if they want to claim the AFC West, but the race is tight. Every single team in the AFC West has 5 wins. The race is wide open. The road, however, is not a walk in the park for the Chargers as they host the Vikings next weekend. The Vikings are such a strange team. They will play well at times and poor at times, but it looks like this might be a tough match-up. Regardless, I think the Chargers pull this one out and get to 6-3 on the season.
