Dave Toub deserves a raise.

We’re not quite to halftime in Week 9’s game between the visiting Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs, but so far, it’s a clear exhibition of one team’s incredible special teams prowess against another’s inability to do anything right. The Packers can only hope things get better here on special teams because things cannot get much worse.

On the day, the Packers have done a decent job to keep the Chiefs within a single touchdown at halftime given how poorly their special teams units played in the first half. Green Bay had two chances to kick field goals, but the first one was a miss from 40 yards on which Packers kicker Mason Crosby was clearly upset with his holder.

After that, the Packers were able to stop the Chiefs on downs after they attempted to convert a fourth-down with a pass to Darrel Williams. From there, they were forced to try another field goal, this time from 37 yards out and that’s when Alex Okafor really came through with an incredible block of Crosby’s kick that took away the momentum just stolen by Green Bay.

It wasn’t just the coverage units that looked exceptional for the Chiefs on Sunday during the first half. Tommy Townsend was outstanding in the couple of chances he had to show what he can do as a punter. On his first punt, shortly after the missed field goal, Townsend put a great boot on a kick that got significant height and was downed at the 2-yard line of the Packers, pinning them deep inside their own territory.

Later in the half, Townsend punted the ball again and the team muffed the catch as it hit Malik Taylor’s foot and the Chiefs recovered to get the ball back in the red zone.

From here, Harrison Butker was able to convert a short field goal to put the Chiefs up by 10 points, largely thanks to the excellent special teams play of the Chiefs during the first two quarters.

The only upside for the Packers at this point is that their defense looks physical while the Chiefs’ offense is struggling. A 10-point deficit could be much larger.
