The Kansas City Chiefs will have reached a proving ground when they host the Green Bay Packers. The team’s upcoming game against Aaron Rodgers and company in Week 9 is the first in a series of significant tests for a team that has yet to pass any real challenge in 2021.

Coming into the season, the Chiefs were filled with the sort of confidence that they could summit any mountain and overcome any such challenge. There was talk of going 20-0 and reaching their third straight Super Bowl. Then came the regular season in which they fell to the Baltimore Ravens, then the L.A. Chargers (at home), followed by the Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans. Just like that, the Chiefs were in last place in the AFC West and relying on cheap wins against inferior competition.

Now the Chiefs are facing a string of three games before their bye that are all in that same “difficult” category. The wheels could come off for the Chiefs in this stretch of the season, but it’s also a chance where they can climb back into this race for AFC supremacy. Is it likely? No, but the Chiefs have to cling to what little hope is left to achieve what they originally set out to do.

Chiefs vs Packers Odds Week 9

The Week 9 betting odds on WynnBET have the Chiefs as 2.5-point favorites despite the fact that the Packers are rolling with six straight victories after falling in Week 1. This very line made me look three times when writing this to make sure I had the facts right. Either Vegas oddsmakers know something we don’t—like perhaps the Chiefs have been faking it for half this season for the sake of drama—or this line is laughably off. I’d go with the latter and the home team with points.

The Chiefs have -140 money line odds, while the Packers (again, what?) are the underdog at +125. The total for the game is set at an over/under of 55 points.

Chiefs vs Packers Prediction Week 9

Here’s the truth: the Chiefs have yet to beat a very good team in 2021 and the Packers are very good. With several previous swing-and-miss attempts (wrong sport, we know), it’s just impossible to back the Chiefs at this point with any sort of educated guess. That said, we’re hoping to be wrong, but we’d be joyfully surprised if the Chiefs can go into Green Bay and come away with a big win.

Prediction: Packers 33, Chiefs 27
