Cornell Powell

Chances are, the majority of Chiefs fans reading this will have forgotten about Cornell Powell until now. It’s not a surprise. The Chiefs have left Powell sitting on the practice squad since the start of the season, even despite making changes at wideout going forward. It’s likely going to stay that way the rest of the year.

The Chiefs signed Josh Gordon in recent weeks to bolster the team’s offense and it’s likely the sort of signing general manager Brett Veach was wanting to make during the offseason when he also pursued JuJu Smith-Schuster and others in an attempt to replace Sammy Watkins as another reliable target who can create separation on his own. Gordon is working his way into the offense at present, and it’s hard to see where there will be space for Powell to do anything at all in 2021.

That said, it’s important to remember that Powell was a late-round pick out of Clemson for this same reason. He never stood out on a talented Clemson roster until very late in his career, when he suddenly became a late bloomer in his final season. Some players need more time than others, but the raw talent stood out on tape enough to make a believer out of Veach and company this spring. Give him time and we’ll hope to see more from him in the years to come.
