Analyzing the Defensive Snaps

The biggest point of discussion of the weekend was safety Juan Thornhill being elevated to the starting lineup in favor of Daniel Sorensen. Thornhill never came off the field, and given the WFT’s offensive output, it’s fair to say that the former Virginia Cavalier will be staying in the lineup. Sorensen still played his more natural position in the dime, and make no mistake about him: if put in position to succeed, #49 can still play.

Cornerback Rashad Fenton continues to play well and has been rewarded with a starting spot. Fenton received his second straight start, and played 100% of snaps for the second time in his career. The third-year corner also had two pass breakups and looks to have a secure hold on the CB 2 position.

Another week without Chris Jones meant the Chiefs had a big hole to fill up front. Tershawn Wharton and Alex Okafor appear to be benefitting the most from Jones’ absence. Wharton continues to make the best of his playing time and should earn some more after his remarkable second half interception.

Willie Gay received just 18 snaps, seven fewer than last week. That may have been the result of specific personnel packages, but the team could also be limiting him in order to keep him from aggravating his toe injury. Gay’s lack of playing time was a little bit puzzling, given the uncertain status of Anthony Hitchens. Ben Niemann, who did not start the game, still led all linebackers with 73% of snaps. Rookie Nick Bolton was not far behind, with 66%.
