KC Chiefs: ‘A win is a win’ is not the case against WFT

“A win is a win” has been a common saying in sports for many years. Even if you play a close game or win on a controversial call, you’ll take a win any way you can get it and move on. For the K.C. Chiefs in particular, we all know they could use a win more that ever right now. Already at 2-3 and below .500 at this point in the season, they have to start digging themselves out of this hole.

However, if the Chiefs do anything but absolutely clobber the Washington Football Team, the saying of “a win is a win” needs to be completely thrown out the window. Washington is not a good football team. The Chiefs should win this game comfortably if they are the team everybody thinks they can be.

The Washington game will tell us a lot about this team going forward. How do they respond to a big loss? Can they put away mediocre teams? So far the returns haven’t been great. They followed up their first loss of the season against the Baltimore Ravens with another loss to the Los Angeles Chargers at home. They also struggled to put away the Philadelphia Eagles until finally pulling away late in the 4th quarter.

The KC Chiefs have to win big today against Washington Football Team.

They have an opportunity to change those narratives today. Many, including myself, once theorized that maybe this team needed a wake-up call early in the season. They have three losses, guys. I understand facing some adversity can get a team going but we’re well beyond that stage. It’s time to put up or shut up.

The Eagles are the only other team the Chiefs have beaten by more than one score since the New York Jets in Week 9 of 2020. While many people don’t care what the score of a game is as long as their team wins, I read into it a little bit more. Too many times last year did this team need Mahomes to pull a rabbit out of a hat late or needed a first down to put the game on ice against halfway decent opponents.

That type of winning is unsustainable as we’ve seen so far this year. They tried to use that same formula against the Ravens and Chargers and it failed and they were lucky it worked against the Cleveland Browns.

Here is the bottom line: Washington’s defense ranks towards the bottom of the league right there with the Chiefs at 27th with 31 points being given up per game. There’s no excuse for the offense keeping up their turnover issues and not putting up at least 30.

Washington’s offense is also nothing to write home about. They have some key injuries along the offensive line with Brandon Scherff and Sam Cosmi being out and star receiver Terry McLaurin did not practice on Friday—although he is possibly set to play. Quarterback Taylor Heinicke is a fine backup but if he throws for 350 yards and a couple touchdowns you can forget about this defense.

If there was ever a team for the Chiefs to have a “get right game” against, it’s Washington. Whether or not they rise to the occasion and show a sense of urgency remains to be seen. If the Chiefs win this game 38-34 or anything close to that there’s going to be complaining and there should be. Washington is one of the worst team in the NFC and maybe the NFL. There are no moral victories.
