The Kansas City Chiefs are a complete disaster right now

Finally, I think we have to lay plenty of blame as well at the feet of Brett Veach. Every serious Chiefs fan went into this season feeling like they didn’t do anything to improve the pass rush. Well, guess what? The pass rush stinks and it wasn’t hard to see coming. Every Chiefs fan I know was worried that the Chiefs needed more proven defensive backs that could cover well. Well, guess what? The coverage is horrible and there are guys running free at all levels of the field. I know you can only do so much in one offseason, but clearly, Veach did not fill all the needed holes this past offseason.

This isn’t a rant to say that the Chiefs are definitively a bad team that will be bad all season and have no reason to hope. If I believed that I wouldn’t be so frustrated right now. The frustration comes from knowing that the players and coaches on this team are capable of better than the mess we saw on the field Sunday against the Bills. They are playing so far below their ceiling that something has to be done to snap them out of it. Do they cut someone to send a message? Do they fire a couple of position coaches to get the players’ attention? Do they bench some guys in favor of young guys? I don’t know what the answer is, but I know something has to change because this team has not been good enough through five games.

I won’t be surprised at all if the Chiefs reel off three straight wins following this loss, but will that mean everything is fine? This team is talented enough to win some games even if they are sloppy and underachieving. Simply stacking a few more ugly wins onto their record won’t really make me feel any better. I want to see this defense clean things up. I want to feel like the offense is finding its rhythm and can be counted on to step up when the defense struggles. I want to feel like the coaching staff is seeing the same problems that we all can clearly see and are actively doing everything they can to fix them.

I love this team and I still believe in this team and that is why I refuse to accept the play that we’ve seen through five games. They are capable of better. I just hope it doesn’t take a wasted year and another offseason to make the changes necessary to get back to the level of success we’ve come to expect. Andy Reid only has so many more seasons of coaching left. You can’t take for granted that you’ll always have talents like Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, and Travis Kelce. Right now the Chiefs are wasting one of the remaining years those guys have together. That simply isn’t acceptable. So my rant is over, I just really hope the Chiefs season isn’t.
