It’s not a surprise that the number of K.C. Chiefs players honored by Pro Football Focus on their first-quarter All-Pro Team is lower than what we might have expected coming into the season. At this point, the Chiefs are a last-place team with a 2-2 record and a defense that shouldn’t he celebrated by anyone. What is surprising, however, is who is not being honored, given how used we are to hearing Patrick Mahomes‘ name thrown around in these discussions.
PFF released their All-Pro team for the first quarter of the 2021 season and the Chiefs two primary pass catchers are representing the team well at wide receiver and tight end with Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce, respectively.
Hill made it on the team as the top wide receiver around with Cooper Kupp of the Rams making a splash at No. 2 overall. Hill already has 453 yards on the season through only four games, with two of those accounting for the majority of his totals. Opposing defenses often have to choose whether to try to stop Hill or Kelce in order to remove one from the game plan, which leaves the other open for big yardage.
The first-quarter All-Pro team is out from Pro Football Focus.
In Week 4, the team’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles, Hill had 3 touchdowns and put up 183 yards on 11 catches. Surprisingly it was his second-highest yardage total through four games.
As for Kelce, no tight end in footballl is going to touch the sorts of totals he’s able to put up most weeks and that’s proving true again in 2021 even as he turns 32 just the other day. Kelce has 24 catches for 312 yards and 3 touchdowns on the season, putting him on pace for another 1K yard season, which would be his sixth in a row, extending his own record for most consecutive by a tight end.
As for the missing person(s), it’s a little weird to not see Patrick Mahomes here, but it’s understandable—I guess—to go with Tom Brady and Kyler Murray as the top two quarterbacks at this point. It’s also odd not to see Tyrann Mathieu or Chris Jones get a nod on the defensive side, but the whole unit has been disappointing on the year thus far.
