Jody Fortson

Starting next week, we’re likely looking at the arrival of Josh Gordon on the offensive side, just as we mentioned earlier with Mecole Hardman. For Jody Fortson, it’s also an intriguing time because he’s in a place where the team is currently rolling four deep through three games with four active tight ends. That might not always be the case, however.

For now, the Chiefs are apparently big enough believers in Fortson as well as Noah Gray to keep both of the youngsters around and protected on the active roster alongside All-Pro Travis Kelce and Blake Bell. But what if injuries change all of that? What if the Chiefs reach a point where roster spots are too precious to hold the luxury of young tight ends in waiting?

Before Gordon arrives and takes away any further offensive targets, Fortson could really take advantage of the opening in front of him against the Eagles with a strong showing to piggy back on his first touchdown catch from Week 3. Fortson’s size and skill set is a rare blend at the position and it’s easy to see why the Chiefs don’t trust his ability to stick on the practice squad.

However, necessity might come calling for the Chiefs at some point and demand their sacrifice of a tight end. If Fortson can look as good as he did last week, he might make it tough for the Chiefs to deliver some difficult news down the road.
