Free agent wide receiver Josh Gordon is set to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to a report from ESPN”s Adam Schefter.

Gordon has been in the process of being reinstated for the last few weeks, and word leaked last week that Gordon was in the final stages of receiving approval from the National Football League to return after being suspended for the last year or more. Gordon has violated the league’s substance abuse policy multiple times and has been suspended accordingly.

The Chiefs made a lot of sense as a potential destination for Gordon, and it’s even something we’ve discussed here at length. Gordon has been a significant physical target in years past with the sort of potential to add another wrinkle to an already devastating offense.

Josh Gordon will reportedly sign with the K.C. Chiefs.

The Chiefs went searching earlier in the offseason for a wide receiver to bring in bu the likes of Josh Reynolds, JuJu Smith-Schuster and even T.Y. Hilton all reportedly turned them down to take free agent offers elsewhere. That sort of searching in the spring was inevitably going to linger after the Chiefs only drafted Cornell Powell on Day 3 of the NFL Draft as their lone move at receiver.

As for the finances, this is where it should also make sense for Kansas City although terms of the deal were not yet known. But Gordon, given his recent suspension and the question marks that surround him on and off the field should keep him at a low-level deal for a contender. It’s also the sort of signing that Brett Veach has specialized in during recent seasons in which he’s brought in veterans to hopefully round out the team—from running backs LeSean McCoy and Le’Veon Bell to defenders like Terrell Suggs and Darrelle Revis.

Gordon hasn’t played since the 2019 season in which he split time between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks. He had 27 catches for 426 yards and 1 touchdown that season in 11 games.
