For the first time since Patrick Mahomes joined the Kansas City Chiefs, the team is below .500 and is last place AFC West. The Chiefs are 1-2. They could easily be 3-0. They could also be 0-3. All three games have come down to the wire.

Although all three games have been close, the 1-2 start has been discouraging. While losses are hard to take, the hardest part is how the losses have come.

The Chiefs offense has gotten off to a slow start in all three games. The offense has scored one touchdown in the first quarter so far in three games this season. On top of that, the offense committed four turnovers on Sunday against the Chargers and have committed six turnovers in the last six quarters.

Leadership can help turn things around for the 1-2 Chiefs.

How does Kansas City overcome its current woes while sitting alone in the bottom of the basement? One word: leadership.

The Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, Chris Jones and Tyrann Mathieu, who are all Pro Bowlers and were part of Kansas City’s Super Bowl win two seasons ago. The Chiefs have leaders who the rest of the team can look up to and rely on.

Not only do the players need to show their leadership, but also the coaching staff. Head coach Andy Reid and coordinators Eric Bieniemy, Steve Spagnuolo and Dave Toub have been in the coaching business a long time. They have had their flaws this season, but if they are also the right coaching staff to guide the Chiefs as they try to rebound from this 1-2 start.

Keep in mind that in Week 2 of the 2019 season, the Chiefs trailed the Raiders 10-0 going into the second quarter. The Chiefs unleashed in the second quarter and scored 28 points and eventually won. The Chiefs scored 28 points again the same quarter later that season in the divisional round of the playoffs after trailing the Houston Texans 24-0.

On top of that, the Chiefs rallied late in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl 54 after being down by two possessions. The Chiefs scored 21 unanswered points to win their first Super Bowl in 50 years.

There are plenty more examples of Chiefs comebacks, but you get the idea.

For some reason, slow starts are nothing new with this team. But it has recently come back to hurt the Chiefs recently. This team has shown many times that it can come back. This is why no one should rule out any possibility of the Chiefs rebounding after a 1-2 start.

All the best teams in every sport have had rough stretches. Tom Brady and Peyton Manning went through rough stretches at times. The Chiefs are going through that right now. Even with their struggles, beat writers, analysts, podcasters, bloggers, oddsmakers, fans and everyone in between will still predict the Chiefs to come away with a win in almost all of their games the rest of the season.
