The K.C. Chiefs defense came into Sunday afternoon with serious questions on the defense, both in terms of recent performances and injury concerns. Now it looks like some of those questions found unfortunate answers.

The Chiefs announced their inactive players for the game, and the team will be missing a cornerstone on the defensive line and a starting cornerback outside with the news that both Frank Clark and Charvarius Ward will not be suiting up against the visiting Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3.

Sunday’s game is an important one for the division as both teams begin their schedule within the AFC West. The Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders both came into the game at the top of the division with 2-0 records and have very winnable games today against the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins, respectively.

The Chiefs will be without Charvarius Ward and Frank Clark in Week 3.

For the Chargers and Chiefs this is a chance to avoid the divisional basement and potentially be two games back of the division lead already.

As for the rest of the team’s inactive, there aren’t any real surprises, at least considering who has been inactive through the first two weeks of the regular season. Laurent Duvernay-Tardif has been a healthy scratch for every game so far, which is a bit concerning considering that he’s in the top 10 cap hits on the active roster.

Austin Blythe has been working his way back to practice after undergoing surgery for a sports hernia, but it’s uncertain how much work he’d get anyway behind Creed Humphrey under center.

As for Daurice Fountain, the wide receiver was a preseason sensation and did well to earn an active roster spot to begin with, but the team has been reticent to give him any actual playing time so far by playing Marcus Kemp, Byron Pringle, and Demarcus Robinson above him on the depth chart.

For the Chargers, they are fortunate to receive good news that Joey Bosa is active after being questionable. However, they will be without veteran cornerback Chris Harris and defensive lineman Justin Jones.

The Chiefs and Chargers kick off at 12:00 p.m. C.T.
