At this point, Patrick Mahomes just needs to throw the ball and catch it himself. That’s because there are very few people he can trust left on the Kansas City Chiefs offense.

So far in the team’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers, the team’s defense has stepped up and the Chiefs have been moving the chains at will. The only problem is that they are down 6-0 because, for some reason, they continue to turn the ball over. It’s happened one time after another after another—good for three turnovers with several minutes to play in the second quarter.

Here’s the first one, on a drive in which the Chiefs were just mowing down the Chargers defense left and right with catches from the likes of Blake Bell and Jody Fortson. Then came this pass over the middle that could have been an easy catch-and-run for a touchdown for the rarely used Marcus Kemp. Instead it turned into a tipped pass for an impressive interception by rookie cornerback Asante Samuel Jr.

Check it out below:

From there, the Chiefs gathered their wits, held on defensively, and got the ball back on the ensuing drive. On this particular drive, the Chiefs were once again heading down toward the red zone when suddenly Tyreek Hill caught a ball in traffic only to have it punched out of his hands. Michael Davis recovered and suddenly the Chargers had life again.

If somehow the Chiefs were waiting to tighten the screws after being down in the game, due to Justin Herbert leading a touchdown drive on the following series, the Chiefs decided to turn it over yet again, which only places more pressure on the defense. On this one, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who had the game-sealing fumble against the Baltimore Ravens in a gut-punch of a loss last Sunday, coughs it up again the following week.

Here’s hoping we’ve seen the last of this and the Chiefs can find some momentum, but this is embarrassing. And at this point, Mahomes is going to have to do it all himself.
