On Thursday, the K.C. Chiefs put assistant coach Greg Lewis in front of reporters to discuss the team’s offense as well as his recent incident with Cleveland Browns safety Ronnie Harrison.

Given a chance to speak about it all, Lewis stated that he allowed his emotions to get the best of him and also iterated that it would never happen again.

For those who haven’t been following along, Lewis was involved in an altercation during Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns. In the first quarter, cameras caught Lewis shoving Harrison and vice versa after it looked as if Harrison had stepped on Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the ground. After the fact, it was clear Harrison was not doing that, but it’s possible tempers flared too much in that moment.

After the incident, the NFL investigated things a bit further and issued a memo to teams demanding that their coaching staff members behave themselves on the sideline. At that point, the NFL then punished Ronnie Harrison by fining him over $12,000. At the time, the punishments looked unequal, but the NFLPA later said that the league also fined Lewis although those figures were never made public.

Lewis is in his first year as the Chiefs running backs coach after taking over the position for Deland McCullough, who left this offseason for the Indiana Hoosiers to be their assistant head coach. Lewis switched over from his previous post working with wide receivers, likely in an effort to round out his knowledge as an offensive coach and potential future coordinator.

Lewis played for eight seasons in the NFL as a wide receiver, including five for Andy Reid and the Philadelphia Eagles.
