A couple of former K.C. Chiefs players took the chance to visit the New England Patriots on Tuesday for workouts among with several other NFL veterans in hopes of showing their production and potential to Bill Belichick and his staff.

According to NFL reporter Mike Reiss of ESPN, the Pats hosted both quarterback Anthony Gordon and cornerback Shakur Brown along with several others in tryouts this week.

The Patriots workouts were focused on special teams players who can also play wide receiver or defensive back, but Gordon was the lone quarterback of the lot in to work out as well.

The Patriots worked out for Chiefs quarterback Anthony Gordon and corner Shakur Brown.

Gordon is likely the most familiar face of the lot for Chiefs fans, since quarterbacks earn the lion’s share of attention over other positions, even in a backup role. Someone like Brodie Croyle shouldn’t be so familiar to Chiefs fans, but there he is, alongside the likes of, say, Ricky Stanzi or Tyler Thigpen.

Back to Gordon. The Chiefs brought in Gordon to the practice squad during last year’s postseason along with Jordan Ta’amu in what looked like a preview of things to come. The Chiefs had Patrick Mahomes and Chad Henne as the obvious top quarterbacks on the roster, and it seemed like Brett Veach had found his developmental arms to bring into the offseason.

From there, however, Gordon would be the only one to last the length of the offseason as Ta’amu was eventually released before any offseason workouts got underway. Veach liked Shane Buechele enough after the draft to sign him as a rookie free agent and he provided the primary competition for Gordon heading into training camp. Ultimately Buechele won out (which doesn’t even mean an active roster spot but instead a slot on the practice squad).

In addition to Gordon, the Pats also looked at Shakur Brown, a cornerback who lasted a full week on the Chiefs practice squad earlier this month. The former Michigan State defensive back looked like a physical ballhawk, but both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chiefs have decided to move on from him rather than have him stick around occupying one of 16 practice squad spots. The Patriots would be his third potential team in a matter of a month.

Next. Important questions to ask of the Chiefs defense. dark
