This was the first NFL game of the 2017 season. The pregame ceremony consisted of the Patriots celebrating their fifth Super Bowl win, which was the biggest comeback win in Super Bowl history. But the Chiefs spoiled the extension of any celebration that night.
After the Patriots scored a touchdown to open the game, rookie running back Kareem Hunt got a handoff on Kansas City’s first offensive snap of the game and season. Hunt, who never lost a fumble in college, fumbled the ball to the Patriots on his first NFL carry.
Despite the bad first impression and the Patriots being up by 10, the Chiefs continued to utilize Hunt. Hunt went off on New England’s defense, running for 148 yards and catching five passes for 98 yards. Hunt had 246 total yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns, creating a record-setting NFL debut.
The Chiefs outscored the Patriots 21-0 in the fourth quarter, pulling off one of the biggest upset wins to open up a season.
