Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill have some sort of special connection. Everyone remembers Travis Kelce talking about a play last season where he ran a route that he wasn’t supposed to, but Mahomes knew where he would be.  That connection is crazy itself, but we may be witnessing a glimpse of how special Hill’s connection to Mahomes is as well.

In case anyone missed it (and honestly it happened so quickly, you might have), Mahomes threw another one of his patented “How did he do that?” touchdowns in the K.C. Chiefs home opener against the Cleveland Browns. Seriously, when it happened, I sat back and started laughing. What else can you possibly do in reaction to this:

Mahomes scrambled to get away and heaved it down the field.  Following an adjustment, Hill stood on the goal line just waiting for someone—anyone—to come near him. After the game, both Hill and Mahomes were asked about that play.  Their response shows exactly why I think this team works so well:

That kind of joking around, good fun is why I think this team works so well.  It’s clear that there is a connection that goes beyond just quarterback and receiver. Mahomes has a way to connect with his receivers on a different level, and that connection doesn’t just end with receivers. We saw during training camp that Mahomes has a special handshake with each of his linemen. His leadership skills make this team what it is.

So while we are only coming off Week 1, I see a team captained by a great leader who can connect with his teammates on a deeper level. They just overcame adversity against a championship contender in the Browns. It’s hard for me to believe that this team can’t bring another Lombardi to Kansas City. I won’t get ahead of myself, but I will say, I can’t wait for the next time that Mahomes just sees a little hand and I get to sit back and laugh.
