The K.C. Chiefs are who we thought they were

The Big Three

Perhaps the biggest assumption we all make about the Chiefs is that if Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, and Travis Kelce are all on the field, then the Chiefs have a shot in any game. I think we definitely saw this proven on Sunday against the Browns. We’ll get to what wasn’t great for the Chiefs in the next few points, but this one really is the most important point about the Chiefs. K.C.’s big three really are that special.

I know you don’t need me to spell it out for you, but if I’m going to pick apart some of their flaws here in a minute, I need to at least take a moment to recognize the sheer greatness that allowed them to win this first game of the season.

Patrick Mahomes is a once in a lifetime talent. Period. We should enjoy every second that we get to watch him play football for the Chiefs because it is extremely likely that we may never see another Chiefs QB like him in our lifetimes. He was amazing once again on Sunday, and for any other quarterback it might go down as one of his all-time great games, but it’s not even surprising for Mahomes at this point. We literally expect this level of greatness from him all the time now.

He’s not alone in his greatness on offense. Tyreek Hill made a very strong argument as to why he should be viewed as the clear best receiver in all the NFL on Sunday. He finished with 11 receptions for 197 yards and a touchdown. The Browns had absolutely no answer for him. His combination of deep speed and elite change of direction make him impossible to cover. His 75-yard touchdown reception really was the start of the change in momentum. He’s a freak of nature as well.

Then there is Travis Kelce who is quickly rewriting expectations for NFL tight ends. You can make a strong argument that his last five seasons are the best five year span of any tight end, ever and he started this season off with 6 receptions for 76 yards and 2 touchdowns. His route running and almost uncanny ability to know where Mahomes wants him to go make him almost impossible to cover with any one man.

The combination of Mahomes, Hill, and Kelce are as special of any offensive trio we have ever seen in the NFL, and they absolutely make K.C. a threat to win any game even if the rest of the team doesn’t have their “A” game.

So now that we’ve covered the positive sides of “they are who we thought they were”, let’s take a second to look at some of their weaknesses.
