Derrick Gore, RB

Derrick Gore has showcased a fine skill set during the Chiefs preseason, especially in the team’s final game against the Minnesota Vikings at Arrowhead. In that game, Gore had 6 carries for 26 yards on the ground while also leading all Chiefs receivers with five catches on five targets for 80 yards and this touchdown.

On that single play, Gore showed Chiefs Kingdom what has Brett Veach so intrigued in the first place. He’s an intelligent runner with good vision who knows when to wait that millisecond and when to use his burst. He’s shifty and uses it well in traffic while following his blockers all the way to the end. It was ideal execution by the entire team, but no one would shine on this play—linemen!—if Gore got too antsy or big-headed.

After losing Darwin Thompson this week (who reportedly decided to take an offer with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad instead of returning to the Chiefs), it was important for K.C. to retain someone who already knows the system. The season is long and Gore is bound to be needed at some point down the line.
