In: Harrison Butker, Tommy Townsend, James Winchester
Out: No one

This is the one area of the roster, besides quarterback, that has the least amount of questions. For the first time in a couple offseasons, the Chiefs failed to bring in any competition at punter for Tommy Townsend and Harrison Butker is well established as one of the league’s best kickers overall. James Winchester is also back for another run.

If there’s any surprise here, it’s the team’s trust in Townsend, but we also saw him look spectacular this preseason, especially against the Arizona Cardinals in the team’s second preseason game. Dave Toub sang his praises following that performance and it’s clear that the team believes in helping him reach his potential while shaving off the rougher inconsistent edges.

As for Butker, too much is made of his missed extra points or even his past struggles with them. The fact is that he’s nearly automatic from anywhere within 50 yards and even quite accurate beyond that, which most teams would love to have in spite of any issues with one point here and there. Here’s hoping Butker can add a Pro Bowl season to his legacy to help steer attention where it’s warranted and not just for the sake of a dated anecdote and overblown issue.
