Daurice Fountain Looked Great

Going into training camp my take on the wide receiver position was that Tyreek Hill is the man, they want to get Mecole Hardman more involved, Demarcus Robinson/Byron Pringle/Cornell Powell would compete for snaps on the outside, and everyone else was just competing for that final depth/special teams contributor spot. It’s just one preseason game, but Daurice Fountain‘s performance on Saturday was good enough to make me stop and rethink things.

While Hill’s status is unquestioned and Hardman’s explosiveness will keep him getting opportunities, it’s not like the rest of K.C.’s wideout group is untouchable. Robinson, Pringle, and Powell aren’t really guaranteed anything. If someone like Fountain was to continue to stand out, there just isn’t that much in the way of him earning some reps with the first string.

Now I’m not calling for Fountain to leapfrog anyone yet, but I did think that he had the best game of any receiver on Satruday. Pringle did have a touchdown catch, but Robinson was a non-factor and Fountain outplayed Powell. Maybe next week Fountain won’t do anything, but his performance in the first preseason game was good enough to grab my attention and I will now be watching him a lot closer next week.

Next up, let’s look at a defender that I wasn’t expecting to jump off the screen like he did in this game.
