No. 3: DE Neil Smith

Alongside his teammate Derrick Thomas, Neil Smith was a big part of Kansas City’s defensive success in the 1990s. After being taken No. 2 overall in the 1988 NFL Draft, Smith gradually improved for four seasons.

In 1992, Smith had his first big year in the NFL after he and Thomas each had 14.5 sacks, tying for sixth most in the NFL. The following year was Smith’s best season statistically where he finished with 15 sacks, more than any player in the NFL. From 1992 through 1995, Smith amassed 53 sacks.

Unfortunately, Smith was unable to win a Super Bowl in Kansas City. After leaving the franchise, he won a pair of Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos.

He ranks third in both sacks and forced fumbles in a career in Chiefs history behind a Hall of Famer in Thomas and a potential Hall of Famer in Tamba Hali. With six Pro Bowls and four All-Pro honors to his name, along with being named to the NFL’s 1990s All-Decade Team, Smith has the resume for a Pro Football Hall of Famer and strongly deserves to be considered.
