Like every other NFL team this time of year, the K.C. Chiefs are doing everything they can to push their players in practice while simultaneously hoping their training staff can help balance the load to keep any injuries from happening. On Tuesday, the Chiefs decided to play it cautious with star wide receiver Tyreek Hill as he dealt with knee tendinitis.

Head coach Andy Reid spoke to reporters from St. Joseph on Tuesday to detail the team’s practice on the first day where pads were allowed in training camp. He gave an update on Hill saying that the team “pumped the brakes” in order to minimize any further damage or issue.

The Chiefs are being cautious with Tyreek Hill’s knee tendinitis.

As the Chiefs most dynamic offensive weapon and top wide receiver, there’s no need for the Chiefs to press Hill much at all in the preseason. He’s a veteran player who knows the playbook well enough to have climbed the depth chart as a former fifth round pick, and he’s been a Pro Bowl performer in each of his five NFL seasons. The only strategy when it comes to Hill should be keeping him safe and sound for the start of the regular season.

As for his absence, without Hill on the field, there should be a bigger opening for Mecole Hardman to show what he can do as a deep threat and for other receivers to claim some ground as well. Demarcus Robinson and Byron Pringle are hoping to show what they can do in contract seasons for the Chiefs, while some guys further down the depth chart—such as Maurice Ffrench, Daurice Fountain, Antonio Callaway and others—hope for that many more reps in front of coaches.

As for other injuries, the Chiefs were still without wideout Chad Williams and safety Juan Thornhill, who are dealing with recent groin injuries, as well as veteran lineman Mike Remmers, who has been out with back spasms. Meanwhile, cornerback Charvarius Ward also got poked in the eye during practice and left.
