KC Chiefs: Defensive players to watch in training camp
By Evan Mead
Tershawn Wharton, DT
The Chiefs have a solid track record when it comes to recent late round picks and undrafted free agents. They’ve found linebacker Ben Niemann, lineman Nick Allegretti, and cornerback Rashad Fenton in the last couple years, and now defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton could be the next man up.
Wharton didn’t see much playing time at the start of the 2020 season, but with Chris Jones missing a couple games last year and Khalen Saunders going down early, Wharton stepped in and shined. Looking into this season, Clark is likely to miss a couple games, which could give Jones the chance to move back outside. If that is the case, Wharton is likely going to be taking a lot more snaps this season.
Wharton displayed the ability to stop the run extremely well, and with a elite amount of speed at the tackle position, he was able to create pressure on the quarterback as well. Wharton didn’t get enough snaps to truly display his full potential, but going into year two, he could find a way to shine.
