K.C. Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce says he doesn’t care whether you pronounce it “Kel-see” or “Kelce.” He just appreciates the fans rooting for him either way.

Earlier this week, Kelce caused an interesting stir—and, really, this shows us how hungry we are for any and all news related to the Chiefs—when he said when he said his “real name was Kelce” and pronounced it like it rhymed with else. By and large, the typical pronunciation for Kelce’s last name sounds like the first name spelled Kelsey. Yeah, here we are wrapped up in the conundrum ourselves.

First, here’s a look at the video that made us all question the very orientation of everything we thought we knew about the known universe:

From there, Kelce was asked once again about his last name and he admitted that he’s good with either version. He also laughed at how out of hand the subject has gotten.

“It turned into its own thing, didn’t it? It started running around. It’s funny. My real name is Travis Kelce [Kel-see]. I say ‘Kel-see’ because that’s what my father says, but everybody on my father’s side says ‘Kelse’ and I go by both. One’s a real name; one’s a nickname. To be honest, I don’t care which one you call me. I appreciate everybody’s support and it’s absolutely hilarious that it got to this point.”

While Kelce isn’t sure that any of this is a big deal, the reality is that he’s not a fringe roster player about whom we rarely refer. He’s an annual Pro Bowler and likely Hall of Famer if he’s able to maintain his current rates of production for a few more seasons. He’s the very best player overall at his position, and a household name for even casual NFL fans. He also happens to play on the team most favored to win a Super Bowl this season.

We were hoping Kelce wouldn’t throw us off like this again, but here we are, free to choose what we want. For some of us, that will be enough, but for the perfectionists out there in Chiefs Kingdom, Kelce just made life a bit tougher.
