Earlier this offseason, the K.C. Chiefs invited a familiar face to Arrowhead Stadium for a visit in free agency that amounted to a lot of excitement and nothing more. Fortunately for Chiefs fans, it sounds like the idea of adding pass rusher Melvin Ingram is an idea worth “revisiting.”

NFL reporter Ian Rapoport recently appeared on the Pat McAfee show to talk about a number of issues, including the recent arrest of Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark on a felony charge for a possession of an assault weapon. Clark has had two such arrests this offseason and was just formally charged for the first incident, dating back to March.

Specifically, Rapoport stated that there’s more “uncertainty than certainty” when it comes to Clark’s availability this coming season for the Chiefs. He might be available to play every game. He might face a suspension. A fine could be forthcoming. The whole thing could also blow over. It’s all just impossible to say at this point.

What is also true is that the Chiefs have a need at edge rusher even before any clouds descended over Clark’s availability. The Chiefs brought in Ingram for a good reason: they had no other obvious starter opposite Clark, who has been labeled overrated even aside from the legal issues. The choices on the roster for the Chiefs at this point all come with question marks, and it feels like an odd way to enter the season without any further additions.

Back in late March, Ingram came and went without a contract offer and it looked like another team might sweep in—or that the Chiefs decided to go in a different direction. However, the Chiefs watched Tanoh Kpassagnon leave in free agency and Alex Okafor is also still gone. Taco Charlton returned and Josh Kaindoh was drafted, but neither player comes with any guarantees.

As for Ingram, he’s coming off of a knee injury that required two separate stays on injured reserve last year, so any deal is going to be contingent upon him being healthy. Perhaps a visit back in March was a precursor to simply waiting on Ingram to further rehabilitate his knee. As Rapoport noted on McAfee’s show, “Usually when you have a veteran like that who wants real money in for a visit and you don’t sign, that’s a guy you revisit kind of before camp.”
