On Tuesday, the United States Track & Field team announced their full slate of athletes set to participate in the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. After testing positive for marijuana in a recent test, it turned out that sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson was officially left off the list.

Richardson was a favorite to win the 100-meter dash and a strong part of the women’s 4 x 100 relay team, but now the U.S. team must move on—like it or not—from Richardson given the 30-day ban. That single month away crushed Richardson’s dreams and created a firestorm of criticism surrounding the decision as an unfair one.

Plenty of high-profile athletes and figures weighed in via social media and press statements to show their support for Richardson, and K.C. Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes was one of them. He took to Twitter to express his frustration of the decision to ban her in the first place, yet even then Richardson was possibly still going to be allowed to run in the relays given the timeliness of the ban.

However, when the U.S. Track & Field committee decided to leave her off the list of participants entirely, it meant she would not be competing at all in the Olympics and Mahomes made another statement.

Mahomes wasn’t the only player from the National Football League to display his support. Odell Beckham, Jr., wide receiver of the Cleveland Browns, also weighed in.

Among other athletes to speak out were Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team.

As for Richardson, she’s staying positive when it comes to social media about the whole decision, fair or not.
