Three months have passed since the Pittsburgh Steelers officially terminated Steven Nelson’s contract, at his own request, but the veteran cornerback remains a free agent even after the draft and mandatory minicamps have come and gone.

It’s very possible that Nelson is simply waiting out offers for teams to get even more desperate and increase their bids as training camp comes into view and injuries cloud the picture. Nelson immediately drew reported interest from nearly half the NFL when he found his freedom from the Steelers, so he shouldn’t want for suitors. Still, the fact that he’s available at least means not a single team has put up the sort of offer that would garner an immediate signing.

The Philadelphia Eagles have sustained interest in Steven Nelson.

So far, there’s quite a bit of smoke coming from the Philadelphia Eagles concerning Nelson, a fit that makes sense given the hole opposite Darius Slay in the secondary at the team’s other boundary corner position. The latest comes from Adam Caplan who says the Eagles “really like him“, a report that would back up their reported initial interest back in March, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Nelson first entered the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs as their third round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. He became a starter in his second season in the league and went on to start for three seasons in K.C. in Bob Sutton’s defense, putting up four interceptions in his final season with the team.

From there, the Steelers offered him a major payday in free agency before the 2019 season and the Chiefs let him go to the Steel City where he started for the last two seasons opposite Joe Haden.

Nelson, who is still only 28, has 52 pass deflections, 7 interceptions, and 4 fumble recoveries in his six-year NFL career.
