The Field

If you’re counting up the total odds, then you might have noticed that between Duvernay-Tardif, Smith, Long, and Wylie, we’ve only got 90 percent accounted for. That’s because the field has to make up the rest.

It’s very possible that the competition changes along the offensive line as the Chiefs get further into the spring and summer. It’s possible Long isn’t ready and Duvernay-Tardif is passed over. It’s possible that Trey Smith is as raw as a sixth rounder, and Andrew Wylie is just here for injury support. In this case, we might see someone else emerge, which is why we’re giving “The Field” some odds here at 10 percent.

Picture this scenario: Lucas Niang wins the right tackle job outright which makes Mike Remmers a free agent in terms of positional attachment. That’s an interesting development, because he plays a similar role to Wylie in terms of versatility and performance, which means Remmers could easily enter the fray as a potential starting right guard for the Chiefs, a veteran between a couple potential rookie starters. His history certainly shows he can man the role.

It’s also very possible that fellow interior linemen could prove themselves as a potential player on the right side. Nick Allegretti is a former guard/center from Illinois who started several games on the left side last season. Yasir Durant can slide inside at the pro level and Darryl Williams is hanging on as a former UDFA with the versatility to play throughout the interior as well. And what about Austin Blythe? Does he have the chops to slide right?

All of these are long shots, but we set the odds accordingly. It’s just important to note that the Chiefs aren’t without other options, even beyond the numerous ones that we typically refer to when discussing the position.
