Andy Reid is ridiculously forced to explain Patrick Mahomes’ remarks about going 20-0

It’s clear you’re dealing with a very, very good team when the biggest source of present drama is around the starting quarterback openly talking about the challenge of pursuing a perfect 20-0 record in the upcoming season.

For the Kansas City Chiefs, the conversation surrounding the team these days is largely around the remarks of Patrick Mahomes recently when questioned by a Bleacher Report reporter during his recent Aloha Golf Classic in Hawaii to raise funds for his foundation, 15 & The Mahomes. During the event, he was asked if there was a record that he had his eyes on breaking. His response was “The only record I have my eyes set on breaking, which would be new this year, is going 20-0.”

Mahomes even went on to say that it’s not really a record to be broken but that it would be “awesome” to make that happen as a team. From there, the media ran with “Mahomes predicts perfection” sorts of articles, which led to reporters back at Arrowhead the following Thursday asking head coach Andy Reid about things.

“Well I saw the whole thing just by chance. I normally don’t see those things, but I did see that one and he was asked “what would be a great challenge for him to work for?” 20-0 made sense. He wasn’t boasting about it. That’s not what he was doing. He just said that would be a great challenge, which it would be. We’ve got a pretty stiff schedule and some great competition that we’re going to play against, so I felt like he was really saying, ‘Listen we all need to get busy and work our tail off because of that.’ … Listen, there’s nobody that’s more competitive and wants new challenges than he does. Thats’ a great one. It hasn’t been done over that many games.”

It’s silly that Andy Reid even had to answer questions about Patrick Mahomes 20-0 comments.

All of this is so unnecessary. Mahomes set for himself and his teammates the lofty goal of winning every single game in the upcoming season. He even stated that it was not likely a record to be broken. However, he’s also not far from the truth. The Chiefs lost a single game last season in which their starters played during the regular season and suffered their second real loss (given that their Week 17 loss to the Chargers was a game in which Reid was resting his players) in the Super Bowl.

This coming season, the Chiefs are likely going to be favored in every single matchup, beginning in Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns and going as deep into the postseason as they can make it. There’s not a single team who is going to see Las Vegas set the odds in their favor compared to the Chiefs. Is it really so insane for a team to go undefeated when they are also clearly the best in the game?

As Reid stated, Mahomes wasn’t exactly walking around waiting for someone with a microphone to throw some trash talk in the face of upcoming opponents. The Chiefs are already the team everyone wants to knock off, so it’s not as if there’s any bulletin board material here either. In fact, the idea of someone asking a question, “What record do you have your eyes set on breaking?” is an idiotic one at its core. The very premise is odd and it’s as if the reporter was talking to some hot dog eating champion about how many frankfurters he was ready to eat in a minute.

The biggest lesson learned in all of this is that June is a tough month for reporters, which means asking a head coach more than one question about a subject so silly that even I’m writing about it here. It’s early summer in the NFL and that’s sad for all of us.
