Quarterbacks

Starter: Patrick Mahomes

Bench: Chad Henne

Practice Squad: Shane Buechele

Cut: Anthony Gordon

We don’t need to spend any time discussing who will be the starter here. The whole world knows it’s Patrick Mahomes. I also think Chad Henne is an equally safe lock to be the backup this season. The Chiefs roster is so built to win that if Mahomes had to miss time, there is no way they would trust someone with no NFL experience with the keys to the car. I also expect that Mahomes and Henne will be the only quarterbacks on the active roster. So that means that the only real battle is for a spot on the practice squad and the role as K.C.’s developmental quarterback.

I don’t feel super confident that Shane Buechele will be that guy. I think either he or Anthony Gordon could earn that spot if they play better throughout camp and the preseason. That having been said, I give the edge to Buechele right now. I like him a little better as a prospect than I did Gordon last year coming out of Washington State. I also think that given the fact that Gordon already has a year of NFL practice squad experience under his belt, that could actually work in Buechele’s favor if their performance is similar. If they perform equally why not go with the younger option who might improve once he has that same experience?

It will be interesting to see if either Buechele or Gordon shows much promise, but this is a pretty low importance battle when it comes to having an impact on the 2021 season. Now let’s move on to the running backs.
