4. New England Patriots

The Patriots had one of the busiest—if not the busiest—offseasons of any team in the NFL this year. New England spent $159.6 million in an attempt to overhaul their underwhelming roster from last season. Something that is not underwhelming is the offensive line for the Patriots. Despite losing Joe Thuney in free agency to the Chiefs, New England still possesses one of the best offensive lines in the league.

Going into the 2020 season, the Patriots employed names like David Andrews, Isaiah Wynn and Shaq Mason, but there was a surprising name who made an impact on the offensive line. Sixth-round pick Michael Onwenu stepped in and played sufficiently well at both left and right guard. According to PFF, Onwenu ranked in the top 10 at the right tackle position, and continued to be a great help at both guard positions.

After missing the entire 2019 season with blood clots in his lungs, Andrews started in 12 games in the 2020 season. In those 12 games Andrews allowed two sacks and 12 pressures. Andrews was a free agent this offseason, and after losing Thuney, the Patriots could not afford to lose their veteran center as well. New England re-signed Andrew to a four-year, $19 million contract, a bargain to keep a player of Andrews’ caliber. Andrews will continue to be Patriots’ anchor on the offensive line.

One player who had an exceptional 2020 season was Shaq Mason. Mason was given a 85.4 overall PFF grade for his play last season. The Georgia Tech product would start in 13 games last season, and only had two penalties against him, while giving up three sacks.

New England should not be viewed as it was last season. The defense will be getting a lot of key players back from opting out last season, and the offensive weapons should be a transparent upgrade from last season’s makeshift receiving core.

Projected Starting Offensive Line:

  1. LT – Isaiah Wynn
  2. LG – Michael Onwenu
  3. C – David Andrews
  4. RG – Shaq Mason
  5. RT – Trent Brown
