According to NFL Network’s James Palmer, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been termed “ahead of schedule” in his recovery and rehabilitation from a toe injury that required surgery earlier this offseason. Per Palmer, Mahomes will even be able to participate on some level in OTAs next week for the Chiefs.

Mahomes injured his toe during the team’s postseason win over the Cleveland Browns in the Divisional Round, and it was clearly hampering him in subsequent contests, including the AFC Championship game against the Buffalo Bills and a Super Bowl loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The injury forced the Chiefs to insert a “special orthotic” for the playoffs thereafter, although Mahomes was quick to deny that the toe was a factor in the team’s inability to repeat as champions.

Shortly after the Super Bowl, Mahomes saw a foot specialist and was scheduled for surgery, as Ian Rapoport noted that rest alone would not cure the ailment.

Patrick Mahomes is “ahead of schedule,” per James Palmer.

As Mahomes preps for another season, the Chiefs have made every effort to keep him upright for the 2021 season and beyond by radically remaking the offensive front with perhaps the deepest line in years (decades?) in K.C. Every single starter has been replaced thus far, although some remain in the mix for potential starting roles, depending on how things play out. Key additions include Joe Thuney in free agency, Creed Humphrey via the draft, and Orlando Brown via a trade with the Baltimore Ravens.

The Chiefs are likely going to take it easy with Mahomes throughout the entire offseason and preseason, since there’s no urgency for him to be ready for anything but Week 1. The Chiefs will want to make sure Mahomes is not only healthy but rested, and testing his toe or other concerns at this stage of the offseason will yield nothing positive. Expect reports on Mahomes in the future to note light work in and around Arrowhead.
