We like the way Chad Johnson believes in Patrick Mahomes

It’s not hard to find a talking head among NFL analysts saying things with great certainty or even making some bold proclamation before the season begins. It’s already happening about the 2021 season, and will continue with great fervor through training camp. However, we can’t help but admire the way former NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson—often known as Ochocinco—backs up his claims, especially as they pertain to K.C. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Earlier this week, Johnson decided to make some predictions via Bleacher Report’s show ‘Drop Zone’ and released the following video:

Yes, that’s Johnson saying, “If Patrick Mahomes doesn’t win MVP this year, I won’t shower for two months.” Honestly, one week would have been plenty and still would have earned our support. One month brings it to a whole new level, given that Johnson is likely sacrificing some vocational and relational benefits with such a sacrifice, in case things don’t work out. After two months without showering, we’re. not even exactly sure what would happen to Ochocinco in the process.

Chad Johnson strongly believes Patrick Mahomes will win NFL MVP.

There are no safe bets when it comes to preseason predictions in the NFL, especially given the parity exhibited in the league week to week. However, the good news here is that Johnson is making as safe a call as he can since Mahomes has been the favorite to win MVP for each of the last few seasons before they begin. Mahomes won the award in 2018 and then finished second in each of the last two seasons to quarterback Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens and then Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers.

Once again, Rodgers looks like someone who could upset Mahomes for the award, and Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills has been enjoying a tremendous growth curve that could result in some eye-popping stats as well. However, Mahomes will also have more time than ever—theoretically—in 2021 after the Chiefs made every effort to provide maximum competition and a much higher ceiling at nearly each spot across the front line, especially with the trade for Orlando Brown Jr. and the presence of Joe Thuney at left guard.

The Chiefs watched Sammy Watkins leave in free agency, but they have plenty of targets returning to compete for his spot and of course the combination of Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce is going to make things easier. By the way, if it helps his credibility, remember that Johnson knows a thing or two about being great on the field after making six Pro Bowls himself as a wideout for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Here’s hoping Johnson doesn’t have to interrupt any hygienic routines anytime soon.
