Round 5, Pick 162 – Duke TE Noah Gray

This feels like the first time the Chiefs have made a serious effort at getting a tight end who is a pass catcher first behind Travis Kelce. I thought Ricky Seals-Jones was going to fill that role last season, but it never transpired. Gray is the new man to step into that role, and I think he’ll get an actual shot.

Gray is not as tall or as quick as Kelce, but he has very sure hands and has the ability to run all the routes. He can be a little bit of a mismatch for the opposing team. He will need to work on blocking if he wants to fill the role of TE2 and get on the field early.

Draft Need – B-
The Chiefs have not showed a lot of interest in finding a solid backup for Kelce, but this will hopefully allow Kelce some plays off to extend his career.

Immediate Production – C
Will probably be on the bench for a bit until his blocking improves. Hopefully takes the TE2 role and runs with it by midseason at the latest.

Potential – B-
His sure hands, route-running, and above average athleticism gives him the mismatch advantage which should allow him to thrive in the future. Concern about lack of top end separation and size keeps me from going higher.

Overall Grade – B-
