While the K.C. Chiefs did not have a first round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft last night, there was still reason for Chiefs fans to pay attention to the first round. What happened in round one heavily impacted who will actually be available for the Chiefs to select on day two. One position in particular that fell just right on the board was wide receiver.

Outside of the top receivers that everyone knew was going in the first ten picks such as Ja’Marr Chase, Jaylen Waddle, and DeVonta Smith, only two receivers went beyond them: Kadarius Toney and Rashod Bateman. That means talented receivers like Terrace Marshall, Dyami Brown, Elijah Moore, and Rondale Moore are all still available heading into the second round.

There’s a pretty good chance that one of those guys makes it to pick 58 or even pick 63, especially with the way the offensive line and linebacker boards fell as well (which the Chiefs could also take advantage of). For example, offensive tackle prospect Teven Jenkins was not selected in the first round, which was a shock to many. How about Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah? Trevon Moerhig? Azeez Ojulari? All of those guys fell out of the first round, which bodes even better for the Chiefs chances of grabbing a talented receiver.

You also have to consider that the Chiefs could move up and take a receiver if they really like one, depending on how the draft board falls. Most fans would probably prefer the team keeps both second round picks, but they could still trade up with those second rounders in a package deal and pick up another top-100 pick that is just a tad lower than their second 2nd rounder. Or they might just move up a few spots from 58 and give up their 4th rounder. There are several different directions the team could go.

The KC Chiefs are in good position to take a wide receiver in the second round.

Some may not think wide receiver is that great of a need, that the Chiefs shouldn’t even think about trading up for one or selecting one with their first pick tomorrow. Brett Veach did mention during his press conference last week that the team is high on Byron Pringle. Demarcus Robinson is also back and has confidence in a leap forward for the coming season. However, actions speak louder than words and Veach went hard after the likes of JuJu Smith-Schuster in free agency (and showed interest in others).

It’s clear this team wants another talented receiver to line up in this stacked offense. Veach has always said the team will look to add weapons for Mahomes every offseason, and they haven’t yet in ’21, so they’re due for taking a receiver to make this offense even more unstoppable.

As it stands, the wide receiver board is looking great for the Chiefs in the second round and I would be shocked if they don’t take advantage. Dyami Brown has been my personal favorite since the start of draft season, but even Terrace Marshall is still there. A lot of fans seem to like the Moores as well. Maybe the Chiefs like Tylan Wallace or Amon-Ra St.Brown, too.

The Chiefs truly could not have asked for a much better situation to be in regarding wide receivers as the second round begins.
