Asante Samuel, CB, Florida State

While not necessarily the most pressing need, there are some questions over the Chiefs’ young group at cornerback.

The current stocks are solid. L’Jarius Sneed was exceptional in his rookie season and Charvarius Ward is likely to return to K.C. The Chiefs also have Rashad Fenton and Deandre Baker is set to return from a broken leg as well. But there is a lot of uncertainty in that group.

If the Chiefs decide to sure things up at corner, Asante Samuel from Florida State is a great option. He is slightly undersized at 5’10, but he is highly rated for his speed, ball awareness and reaction quickness, and is seen as a good cover corner.

Samuel was ranked as the number five corner on Kiper’s draft big board, but the four guys ahead of him—Jaycee Horn, Patrick Surtain, Greg Newsome and Caleb Farley–were all selected in the first round, making him the best-available corner heading into the draft’s second day.

Samuel had a season grade off 81.8 in 2020 according to PFF, ranking 19th among corners. He allowed 19 receptions and one touchdown against on 32 targets, with three interceptions last season.

Again, while not essential, Samuel could provide the Chiefs with some depth and certainty at corner.
