Cornerbacks
The Chiefs have three solid corners under contract in Charvarius Ward, L’Jarius Sneed, and Rashad Fenton, but with Bashaud Breeland still a free agent, the Chiefs may be looking to add another player in the second round to compete for playing time. They brought in nickel corner K’Waun Williams for a visit, but he ended up re-signing with the San Francisco 49ers. If there aren’t any other free agent corners they really like, K.C. may be waiting to see if anyone falls to them in the draft before they make any other moves.
Elijah Molden – Washington
If the Chiefs were interested in a physical slot corner like Williams in free agency, Elijah Molden could be exactly the kind of player they may look to target in the draft. Molden is arguably the best slot corner in this draft class. At just 5-9 and running a 4.6 forty, Molden isn’t a guy you are going to line up on the outside against larger elite receivers. But don’t let his size and timed speed fool you, Molden can play. His smarts, efforts, and instincts make him an asset to any secondary and the fact that some are comparing him to Tyrann Mathieu should be enough to get any Chiefs fan’s attention. While he’s a highly regarded prospect, his height and 40-yard dash time could be enough for him to slip right into the Chiefs hands.
Tyson Campbell – Georgia
If the Chiefs are looking for an outside corner prospect, Tyson Campbell could make a lot of sense. Campbell has a really tempting combination of height/length (6-1), speed (4.36 second time in the 40), mirroring ability, and sound tackling to make a second round pick a worthy investment. Campbell’s only problem has been a lack of ball skills. He has the ability to stick with any receiver, but he just doesn’t find and get his hands on the ball enough. If the Chiefs feel like they don’t have to rush him on the field and can develop that aspect of his game, his upside is off the charts. That one hole in Campbell’s game may be just enough to push him down the board and into the Chiefs hands.
Aaron Robinson – UCF
If Elijah Molden goes off the board before the Chiefs pick and they still want an aggressive slot corner, Aaron Robinson would be another great choice. At 5-11 Robinson might even be able to play some on the outside, but he would be most at home in K.C.’s defense in the slot where they could use his combination of instincts and physical nature. He has quick reflexes and recovers well, which is useful when covering quick receivers in the slot. With slot cornerback basically being a starting position in today’s NFL, Robinson is well worth a second round pick, but if teams are still busy prioritizing bigger outside corners, the Chiefs may be able to land Robinson at the end of the round.
So there you have it Chiefs fans. That’s 20 different prospects for the Chiefs to target at six different positions when they are on the clock in the second round. In a perfect world, what two prospects from this list would you pick to pair together for KC? While many of these players may go off the board before they pick, several of them will not and hopefully the Chiefs will take advantage. So what do you think of these options? Do you think too many of them are unrealistic options in the late second round? Are there other players you like even more? I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments below.
