Fifth Round – 183rd Overall – Ukeme Eligwe, Linebacker

The sixth round selection wasn’t the only swing-and-miss for Dorsey and the Chiefs in 2017. The team also missed pretty egregiously in the fifth round, when they used pick number 183 on Georgia Southern linebacker Ukeme Eligwe. What’s worse, the team traded up to the spot to secure the rights to the linebacker. While Eligwe was more productive than the sixth round safety ever was, he still failed to make a significant impact for Kansas City or in the NFL.

Eligwe spent the 2017 season with the Chiefs where he earned only one start, but did appear in 14 of the team’s 16 games. He was a solid contributor for the team that year but he failed to make the active  roster in 2018, becoming a casualty of the final round of roster cuts. He spent the 2018 season with the New York Giants where he appeared in 10 games, but was again cut in the offseason. After stints in which he did not appear in a game with the New York Jets and the Las Vegas Raiders, Eligwe is currently a free agent after being cut by Vegas in March.

Fourth Round – 139th Overall – Jehu Chesson, Wide Receiver

The Chiefs also traded up into the draft’s fourth round, giving up two fifth round selections for the rights to draft Michigan wide receiver Jehu Chesson. This was widely regarded as a sneaky good draft pick with the potential to become a legitimate steal. But, unfortunately for Kansas City, the prognosticators were very wrong.

Chesson appeared in 12 games including one start for Kansas City in 2017, but made only two receptions in his rookie season. Like Eligwe, the Chiefs cut Chesson in their final set of roster cuts prior to the 2018 season. The Washington Football team picked up the former Wolverine and he spent another unproductive season in the NFL as a reserve wideout in the nation’s capitol. He recorded only one reception in 12 games there, though, and failed to stick with Washington after the season.

After spending 2019 out of the league, Chesson signed on with the New York Jets at the start of the 2020 offseason, but did not play in the 2020 season. He is not currently on an NFL roster.
