Things have been mighty quiet around Arrowhead Stadium for the last several days. Free agent visits have ground to a halt, at least as far as we know, and the last of the K.C. Chiefs recent signings have all been introduced. There’s nary a rumor in the mill and even pre-draft visits, which could keep us excited, have been halted by the COVID-19 pre-draft protocols. In short, Chiefs Kingdom is starved for news.

While it’s true that the wheels of free agency have slowed in general, they might have ground to a halt for now—at least until the end of the month. No one knows for sure except those on the inside, but at this point, it might make sense for the Chiefs to let the 2021 NFL Draft play out in its entirety before making another offer to anyone else. That’s because funny things can happen over draft weekend.

Every year, some incredible values can be found falling in the draft order. It’s also an annual tradition to see a few intriguing veterans dealt in the days leading up to and during the draft. In short, the draft will not only bring in a handful of new prospects to the Chiefs roster but general manager Brett Veach might also be waiting to see which veterans wiggle loose as teams decide to move on after drafting others.

For example, rumors surfaced that the Chiefs had checked in on Russell Okung at one point in free agency. Along with Alejandro Villanueva, Okung is likely the most talented left tackle option left yet both players remain available. It makes sense on the part of the players and on the part of a franchise like the Chiefs to see how the market changes with an incoming class of players.

The Chiefs might be waiting for the NFL Draft to finish before making more moves.

Just as one example—and this is complete conjecture, but what if the Broncos decided to grab Teven Jenkins and solve the right tackle woes that have plagued them for years? They could then release Ju’Waun James who was previously slotted into that spot for next year. That might not excite Chiefs fans, and right tackle isn’t the problem here, but you get the idea. One decision to leads to another action which creates a domino effect, and it makes sense to keep all options open when there’s no rush on finalizing the roster.

Of course, none of that is fun for the fan waiting for news of any kind in early April, but that’s not Veach’s concern. His priority is to build the best roster he can for the Chiefs to contend in 2021. If Chiefs Kingdom has to wait a few weeks for some news, that’s just what it’s going to take.
