Bashaud Breeland

This is a familiar spot, unfortunately, for cornerback Bashaud Breeland.

Last year, Breeland waited some time before signing a one-year deal with the Chiefs for $3 million. The year before that, he signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs for $2 million. Before that, he’d signed a one-year deal with the Green Bay Packers for $880K. At least Breeland is trending in the right direction monetarily.

This past year, Breeland only played in 12 games, but he was once again a sticky, physical boundary corner for a team that made it to the Super Bowl. Breeland has, at this point, illustrated that he’s capable of playing up to the biggest moments in the game, and he’s also quite reliable when it comes to health. At the age of 29, he should still have plenty left in the tank and comes with more postseason experience than most players will ever earn.

At this point, we can only hope that, like Reiter, Breeland is holding out for more money or more job security, because the market should have already provided Breeland with multiple offers. Given that Kevin King somehow got a single-season deal for $5 million (Packers) and that Robert Alford has also been signed (Cardinals) despite not playing since Breeland was a Packer, it seems crazy that Breeland is still available.

Will he return to the Chiefs? It doesn’t feel likely given that the team was looking at K’Waun Williams in free agency as a slot option, meaning that the coaches are likely wanting L’Jarius Sneed to line up outside on a full time basis. Then again, if the money is right, Breeland could be a steal of a re-sign down the road.
