The K.C. Chiefs made a huge splash at the start of free agency when they signed the best interior offensive lineman available (Joe Thuney) to a huge contact. While most of Chiefs Kingdom was still buzzing about Thuney, the excitement only built as the Chiefs were linked to the top tackle available, Trent Williams, and they signed former Pro Bowl guard Kyle Long.

Since then, however, the excitement has drastically dropped off as the only signings have been K.C. bringing back players on team friendly deals. This drop off in excitement has led many fans to believe that the Chiefs have missed out on the ability to upgrade the roster and that it will be hard to improve the team much at this point. I don’t believe that to be true.

There are a lot of players still available right now who would significantly upgrade the Chiefs roster from where it is today. It’s important for people to remember that it simply isn’t possible for teams to have All-Pro level players at every position on the field. Would it be great if the Chiefs had signed the best player available at the start of free agency at every single position of need? Sure, but when you have a salary cap and 31 other teams competing for those same players, you have to pick where to spend big and where to look for value to add guys to help your team despite not being a Thuney-level signing.

That having been said, I believe there are players at multiple positions of need who would actually be more than just a Mike Remmers sort of value signing; these players would be a clear upgrade to starting positions on the roster and are moves that all fans should be in favor of. Before you completely write off free agency in 2021, check out this list of available free agents that the Chiefs should still be taking a close look at.

[Disclaimer: This post was written on Sunday, so if by the time you are reading this some of these names have signed somewhere I hope you will understand.]

Let’s kick this list off by looking at the best wide receivers still available.
