Nick Allegretti

Some fans seem to be overlooking Nick Allegretti in their plans for next season and I believe that is a mistake. While Allegretti may not have come out of the gates playing at a Pro Bowl level in his first action as a NFL starter, I believe he showed enough promise to be part of the plans for next season, especially with the Chiefs so desperate for starting caliber players right now.

Allegretti was arguably the Chiefs best run blocking interior lineman last season after Kelechi Osemele went down. He’s one of K.C.’s few linemen who has the power to move defenders. The Chiefs run game was subpar last season, and if they want to rebuild the line with stronger options that can help with that, keeping Allegretti in the lineup would make sense.

I will admit that Allegretti needs to continue to improve his pass protection as there were some breakdowns last season, and in a pass heavy offense with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, you can’t get by as someone who is only good at run blocking. That having been said, Allegretti has only started 12 career games in the NFL. That’s not even a full season yet, so he’s certainly not a finished product and deserves time to continue to develop.

The other interesting thing about Allegretti is that he has experience in college as a center, so it’s possible that the Chiefs could give him a shot at taking over Austin Reiter’s job for next season if they like his upside and feel like they have other options they could play at left guard (we’ll talk about one of those later on). So Allegretti is a young developing player who could be K.C.’s only returning starter and has the potential to start at a couple of different spots on the interior of the line. All of that adds up to a guy that may very well be one of the starters in 2021.

Next up, let’s talk about KC’s draft pick that sat out last season.
