K.C. Chiefs: Four safety targets to consider in free agency
By Josh Fann
Kenny Vaccaro
Veteran safety Kenny Vaccaro was part of the cap casualty wave that will soon be taking effect on many teams this offseason as everyone tries to get under the cap. The Tennessee Titans released Vaccaro this past week, which saved them nearly $4 million in cap space. Now he is free to sign with any team he wants. Of course, the K.C. Chiefs should be in on Vaccaro because he is a quality starter.
This past season with Tennessee, Vaccaro tallied 62 solo tackles, 5 passes defended, 6 tackles for a loss, and a sack. Vaccaro is a willing tackler and is someone who you can trust to blitz, which defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo loves to do with his defensive backs.
If the Chiefs were to hypothetically move on from Sorensen this offseason then that leaves a hole as Spagnuolo likes to blitz Sorensen so there would be an opportunity for Vaccaro to contribute there. He’s also a bit more reliable in coverage than Sorensen despite the fact he may not be the player he was a few seasons ago. Vaccaro has also been fairly healthy as well, appearing in 13 games or more the past three seasons.
While more safety options may become available as more cuts start to happen, Vaccaro is someone the Chiefs could look at right now.
