Tre Boston

I’ll be honest I’m not as enthusiastic about this potential move as I would’ve been two or three years ago. I’ve always been fond of Tre Boston and he’s been a solid starting safety in the league for many years. The fact the Chiefs didn’t make a move on him in 2018 or 2019 when they needed safety help badly and instead trotted out Ron Parker and Dan Sorensen as their starters in 2018 was pretty baffling.

Nevertheless, Boston is a free agent once again this offseason, has plenty of range, and can be a serviceable safety in the league still. Similar to Hooker, Boston could rotate with Thornhill and give him a break at free safety. In 2020, Boston recorded 61 solo tackles, 4 passes defended, and an interception. Not exactly an eye-popping stat line but for what you would be getting, it’s solid.

The one problem with Boston, and why I wouldn’t be as enthusiastic about acquiring him this time around, is because he’s getting older and has never been a great tackler. If you haven’t noticed, the Chiefs want defensive backs who can tackle well. Not sure Boston is someone they like anyways because, as we mentioned, he was sitting there for the Chiefs to take the past few years and they never did. It will be interesting to see how his market develops.
