Ricky Wagner, Right Tackle

If the Chiefs went this direction, it might signal there are more than just a handful of questions regarding Mitchell Schwartz. In truth, if Schwartz is healthy and wants to keep playing, I’d be fairly surprised if the Chiefs don’t welcome him back with open arms. Unfortunately, those are some fairly significant questions that are yet to be answered.

Ricky Wagner was excellent in 2020. This might be controversial, but part of the driving force behind Aaron Rodgers’ career year was the fact his offensive line as a whole kept him upright the vast majority of the time. Wagner was a huge part of that, allowing only one sack in his 608 snaps on the season.

Part of my confidence that the Chiefs haven’t come close to peaking is the fact that Patrick Mahomes has yet to enjoy that type of situation. With how good he played this past season, can you imagine if he didn’t face constant pressure? It’s not that the Chiefs offensive line is bad, they’re just not elite.

I think Wagner is probably a stretch for the Chiefs at this point. I think he has the opportunity to command a larger contract in free agency and I also think the Chiefs are planning on having Mitchell Schwartz in 2021. Still, he’s an option to consider at the right price.
