Damien Williams and Darwin Thompson

It has been over a year now since we have seen Damien Williams running into the end zone in Miami. Amazing how the time flies. Williams opted out of the 2020 season specifically because his mother had just been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. To be clear, this cut should have nothing to do with his missed time. I do not believe any of these players should be penalized for the tough choices they had to make last year.

For Williams, it has more to do with the presence of Clyde Edwards-Helaire and how easy it is to find replacement running backs in the NFL. His cap saving number would be $2,175,000, which alone is not devastating to the Chiefs cap, but why draft a running back in round one if not to make him the feature back? Paying an extra $2.7 million to Damien might not be something the Chiefs want to do.

Darwin Thompson has a different story. Thompson saw only 33 snaps and managed to have 2 fumbles as well as a drop. The production has not been there for Thompson, and despite being a sneaky fan favorite at times, it seems likely that the Chiefs will look elsewhere at the back-up running back position. The 24-year-old former sixth-round pick from 2019 has looked electric in spurts, but the lack of consistency has been too much for him to see the field.
