2. Give Tyrann Mathieu a contract extension

Tyrann Mathieu is the heart and soul of the Kansas City Chiefs defense, and he’s one of the most important players on the team. That having been said, his $19.7 million cap hit in the final year of his deal with K.C. is a big sum when the Chiefs are in need of more space. Cutting Mathieu would be insane given his performance and leadership, and there aren’t any more years on his deal to push this year’s money to. An extension for the Honey Badger just makes too much sense.

Mathieu is only going to be 29 next season, so he still has several years of quality football left in him. By signing an extension that adds a few more years to his time in K.C., it could be a win/win for both the team and the player. Mathieu seems really happy with the Chiefs and the Chiefs defense needs him. By signing an extension, the Chiefs could keep him around and clear some space for next season.

Veach has been able to get deals done with all of KC’s biggest players (Patrick Mahomes, Chris Jones, Tyreek Hill, and Travis Kelce) without strapping the team financially. I’m confident he can do the same with Mathieu this offseason in order to keep him in Kansas City longer and free up some much needed space this season.

The final step includes one major move and the possibility of a few others.
